Ask ten agencies what a website costs and you will get ten different answers. That is because “a website” can mean a five-page business site or a full online store with integrations. This guide explains what actually drives the price, which costs are one-time and which recur, and what we charge at Tech Aventure.
What decides the cost of a website
- Number of pages and templates. A five-page site with one layout costs less than a 40-page site with many different page types.
- Design. Adapting a ready-made theme is quicker than a fully custom design created around your brand.
- Platform. WordPress is usually faster to build on; custom code takes longer but gives full control. See our guide to WordPress vs a custom website.
- Features. Enquiry forms and WhatsApp buttons are simple. Bookings, payments, member logins, multiple languages and integrations with other software add development time.
- Content. Whether you supply the text and photos or need copywriting, photography or translation.
- SEO setup. Page structure, speed work, schema markup and on-page optimisation done properly from the start.
- Support after launch. Updates, backups, security monitoring and small changes.

One-time costs and ongoing costs
One-time: design and development, content creation, initial SEO setup and moving content from an old site.
Ongoing: domain renewal every year, hosting, an SSL certificate (often included with hosting), renewals for any premium themes or plugins, maintenance and updates, and marketing. Ask for these to be listed separately so you can budget for the year, not just the launch.
How to keep the cost under control
- Write down the pages and features you need before asking for quotes.
- Launch with the essentials, then add features in phases.
- Prepare your text and photos early so the project is not delayed.
- Compare quotes on scope, not just price: check whether mobile design, SEO, training and support are included.
- Make sure the domain, hosting account and code are registered in your name.
Questions to ask before you hire a developer
- Who owns the website, domain and content after launch?
- Is the site built to be mobile-friendly and SEO-ready from day one?
- Can I edit pages myself, and is training included?
- What does support cost after launch, and what does it cover?
- How long will the project take, and what do you need from me?
